Chairman of Council
In 2012 my husband, David and I moved to Purley from St Albans, where we’d lived for over 30 years and brought up our two children. I was a Teacher of the Deaf/Education Manager by profession and in my retirement, enjoy volunteering at Purley School as well as being a member of their fundraising team. It was love of the river that brought us to Purley; this has been one of our favourite parts of the Thames during our 40 years of boating and remains so, even after being flooded out of our home in 2012! My interests include going to the theatre, listening to music of all types, dancing and cooking. I’ve been a parish councillor since 2013, sit on the Planning, Highways and Footpaths sub-committees and am vice-chairman of the Barn sub-committee.

I’ve lived in Purley for around 20 years, having moved down the road from Tilehurst so I suppose I’m classed as a “Local” now.
I’ve loved it here in the Village from the first day I arrived; the peace and quiet after Tilehurst, the “Village” atmosphere and most of all the friendliness of the people. Living by the river, the occasional flooding is a nuisance but watching the way it brings people together, with complete strangers helping one another is worth all the inconvenience – well, almost!
I worked in the travel industry straight from leaving school so it’s no wonder that travelling is high on my list of interests. In more recent years I’ve become involved in training customer service staff for a local company which is a refreshing challenge and a great place to work, especially as I now only work part-time!!
I’ve been a Flood Warden for several years and am now also a member of the Purley Flood Defence Group which aims to reduce the risk of flooding in the Village, but working with (or is it against?) some of the other organisations involved can be both frustrating and time consuming. Hopefully the efforts the group are making will in due course begin to reap benefits for the whole village, but clearly it won’t happen overnight.
Apart from travelling, I enjoy gardening, fishing, painting with watercolours, reading historical fiction and – strangely – working!!
